The Law Commission of Ontario (LCO) regularly consults with interested members of the public and organizations who have expertise and/or perspectives to share with respect to any of our law reform projects. The LCO is committed to facilitating the participation of persons with disabilities in our consultation processes and to providing an equal, dignified and respectful consultation environment.
Public consultation may involve the release of consultation or discussion papers and solicitation of written submissions; the hosting of focus groups, roundtables or public meetings, whether in person or by teleconference or online methods; in-person interviews; questionnaires or surveys; and other forms as appropriate.
The LCO’s public consultation processes will reflect its mandate to promote access to justice, and will comply with the requirements of the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
The LCO will strive to design its consultation processes in a way that includes persons with disabilities, and where barriers to accessibility are identified, will take steps to remove them, to the point of undue hardship.
The LCO’s consultation materials are available in print and on our website and, upon request in alternative formats. Accessibility is a priority for the LCO when selecting consultation venues. Where requested, the LCO will provide American Sign Language (ASL), langue des signes québécoise (LSQ), real time captioning, and intervenors to interpret in-person communication for persons with disabilities.
