The Law Commission of Ontario is creating a new voluntary Community Council to reflect its commitment to wide public engagement. Appointments are for two years with potential for renewal for an additional term.
The LCO was created in 2007 with a mandate is to review the law and make recommendations for reforms to make the law more accessible, effective and relevant; to clarify and simplify the law; consider how technology might increase access to justice; and stimulate critical debate about the law. The LCO is guided by its Strategic Plan and by values that include openness and inclusiveness. Information about the LCO’s projects and other work can be found here.
The Community Council is being created as an advisory and networking group to assist the LCO, particularly the Board of Governors and the Executive Director, in reaching out to Ontarians with an interest in law reform, serve as a source of research projects, provide opportunities for collaboration, contribute professional skills and otherwise informally contribute to the LCO’s work. Council members will meet once a year or as needed and may be asked to contribute individually as appropriate.
The membership of the Community Council is to be wide-ranging and may include both individuals and representatives of organizations selected on the basis of personal or professional skills, association with diverse organizations or communities and interest in law reform.
Please submit a letter outlining why you are interested in being a member of the LCO’s new Community Council and a resumé setting out your qualifications and experience relevant to your ability to assist the LCO to achieve its goals by September 30, 2011 to:
