The LCO was originally established by Agreement dated July 6, 2007, and renewed for five years on January 1, 2012. Through this partnership, the Law Commission of Ontario has a mandate to make recommendations to

make the legal system more relevant, accessible and efficient
-
simplify or clarify the law
-
use technology to increase access to justice
-
stimulate critical debate about law, and
-
promote scholarly legal research
The Board of Governors has approved policies to govern the operations of the Commission:
-
a “Good Governance Policy” in keeping with our values of excellence, transparency and accountability (under review);
-
"Language and Translation" (under review);
-
"Copyright and Attribution" to apply to research completed for the LCO;
-
Accessibility Policy; and
The current Strategic Plan (2012-2016) sets standards for the LCO's activities. The LCO Board of Governors periodically reviews the Strategic Plan and its policies.
