LIMITED CONTRACT TRANSLATOR POSITION

The Law Commission of Ontario (LCO) seeks a full-time English-French translator from September 2011 to August 2012.

The LCO was established by the agreement of the Attorney General of Ontario, the Law Foundation of Ontario, the Law Society of Upper Canada, Osgoode Hall Law School (all of whom provide funding) and the other Ontario law schools. Officially located at Osgoode Hall Law School, the LCO is housed until summer 2011 elsewhere on the York campus. Although it works closely with government, the LCO is an independent body, a status recognized by all the partners to the Founding Agreement.

The LCO’s mandate is to make recommendations to increase the legal system’s relevance, effectiveness and accessibility; improve the administration of justice through the clarification and simplification of the law; and consider the effectiveness and use of technology as a means to enhance access to justice. The LCO is also expected to stimulate critical debate about law, promote scholarly legal research and foster links with communities, groups and agencies.

As the LCO’s translator, you will be responsible for the timely translation of project documents such as consultation papers, interim reports, final reports and other documents as required. A sample of these papers and publications may be found on the LCO website at www.lco-cdo.org. The translator will also proofread the layouts of final publications and ensure documents are accurately translated.

The successful candidate will have a University Degree or Certificate in English-French translation with 2-5 years of translation experience in a relevant field and excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills in English and French. The candidate must have the ability to prioritize, multitask, work well under pressure and meet deadlines. Candidates with a background in legal translation are preferred.

Please submit an application by email, by Friday August 26, 2011, describing how your skills and experiences make you suitable for this position;  include your resumé, and the names and contact information for three relevant referees to: LawCommission@lco-cdo.org to the attention of:  Dr. Patricia Hughes, Executive Director, Law Commission of Ontario.
