The Law Commission of Ontario is accepting applications for the fall/winter 2011-2012 from undergraduate law students currently enrolled in an Ontario law school. The LCO’s mandate is to make recommendations to reform law to increase access to the legal system, to simplify and clarify the law and to consider ways in which technology can assist in these objectives. It is also expected to stimulate critical debate about law and promote scholarly legal research.
The LCO’s current projects include the following: developing a framework for law as it affects the elderly; developing a framework for law as it affects persons with disabilities; vulnerable workers and precarious work; and family law.
Students will be primarily involved in carrying out research in support of the LCO’s projects and depending on the stage of the projects, students may also have an opportunity to participate in consultations with community groups, report drafting and preparation, and other on-going activities of the LCO. Students will have an opportunity to see and participate in the process of law reform from inside a law reform commission. Students may be requested to do some administrative work.
The LCO office is located on the York University campus in Toronto. Students from law schools outside Toronto will work in the city where their law school is located. Some travel may be required, depending on the particular activity in which the student is involved.
