The LCO Releases Results of Family Justice Consultations

TORONTO, September 16, 2010 – With “Voices from a broken family justice system,” the Law Commission of Ontario is today releasing the results of its public consultations in its family law project. Ontarians told LCO researchers about their experiences in trying to resolve family issues. Workers in the family law system talked about their experiences.
The voices of people who have used the family justice system – men and women from various communities, parents and children – are powerful. They cite basic issues such as the difficulty in finding reliable information and accessing appropriate supports. Those in the system – lawyers, judges, police officers, social workers and counsellors – also offer compelling observations about needless system complications, the emotional weight of family breakdown and inconsistent outcomes.
“These highly diverse voices reflect the importance of hearing from those closest to the system,” said Dr. Patricia Hughes, Executive Director of the LCO. She added, “The users and workers who come to life in these pages will have a significant part to play in our thinking as we develop reform options for the current system.”
We invite you to download a copy of this latest LCO release, which distils the stories of over 100 subjects. The LCO welcomes the input of all interested people and communities before we release our interim and final reports in 2011.
