The Law Commission of Ontario (LCO) is committed to consulting with interested members of the public and organizations who have expertise and/or perspectives to share with respect to any of our law reform projects. Consultation may take the form of written submissions, online surveys, interviews, focus groups, meetings or other forms.
During such consultations, personal information may be gathered about individuals, including names, contact information, demographic information and personal histories. All information collected through consultations is from voluntary sources.
The LCO is committed to respecting the privacy and confidentiality of individuals with whom it consults to the fullest extent possible within the law. The LCO will not release identifying personal information about any individual without first seeking permission from the individual in question unless required by law.
Quotations or stories of persons who have been consulted may be included in the LCO’s public documents in order to provide concrete examples of areas in need of law reform. In such cases, the LCO will remove all identifying information from the quotation or story.
Information collected through public consultations may be released in aggregate or group form for the purposes of analyzing broader social trends. The LCO’s use of any demographic data for these purposes will not identify any particular person.
LCO staff will keep all of the results of public consultations in strict confidence. All of the computer data will be protected by a password. All of the information collected from individuals during consultation will be stored in a secure location.
