It’s RightsCon week in Toronto and the LCO are doing their part! On May 14 the LCO and Mozilla Foundation partnered to host a Roundtable on Digital Rights and Digital Society. The event brought together two dozen technologists, academics, lawyers, and community advocates to discuss a law reform and digital rights agenda for Ontario. Several priority themes emerged, including: the question of accountability for algorithms that now automatically filter content, price goods, determine eligibility for bail, and make medical recommendations; platform accountability and transparency beyond the choice to either opt-in or miss-out; modernizing labour rights in a gig economy of precarious work; and better supporting digital equality and digital civil society in an era of smart cities and asymmetric platform power. LCO and Mozilla will publish a report with the findings of the roundtable in the next few weeks.”
