Professor Jamie Cameron is the new Osgoode Hall Law School LCO Counsel in Residence, serving as Scholar from January to July 2011. Professor Cameron intends to continue her exploration of the status of newsgathering under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, considering whether and how the Charter should protect the newsgathering practices of the media and analyzing the permissibility of limits on newsgathering and press freedom in three areas: the law of defamation; the journalist-source privilege (or reporter’s privilege); and access to justice (i.e. publication bans and other restrictions on access or openness in the administration of justice). The LCO will support Professor Cameron’s production of scholarly articles in the area and the organization of a symposium on newsgathering and the Supreme Court of Canada’s relevant jurisprudence.
